The Fountain of Life 4
John 4:14 But whoever takes the water I give him will never be in need of drink again; for the water I give him will become in him a fountain of eternal life. The First Drop of Water Imagine, a single drop of water becoming so powerful like the waterfall pictured. Standing this close to the water, the sound would be deafening. The ground would be shaking beneath your feet. You would probably be a little fearful. And you would be in reverence of the power before you. The First Sip of Water “whoever takes the water I give him will never be in need of drink again” Imagine, a desert with no water. The soul is like a traveler wandering through a desert. It is thirsting for happiness, seeking it everywhere, and cannot find it. It looks in all directions and tries all objects... in vain. Nothing meets its' desires. A sinner, seeks for joy in wealth and pleasures yet he is not satisfied. He still thirsts for more, and continues to seek for happiness in some new object. To such a weary and unsatisfied sinner - the “water” - the grace, mercy, forgiveness of sins and salvation that Christ offers would be like a sip of cold water to a thirsty soul. He who drinks will be satisfied. He will not have a sense of want. He who drinks this “water” will not seek for happiness in other objects. He will not desire the pleasures and amusements of this world because he is satisfied with the grace of Christ. “Again”, tells us that this will be forever. Whosoever drinks - all who partake of the Gospel - shall be forever satisfied with its pure and rich joys. This Sip Will Become a Fountain “for the water I give him will become in him a fountain” Jesus didn't say you would only get a small trickle. Jesus said it will become a FOUNTAIN. A fountain, a waterfall, enough to more than satisfy your thirsts. In fact, so much water [truth of God] that you will need to share it with all of those around you. {Synonym for fountain = outpouring, outflow} God wants this fountain He put in us to be outpoured, to outflow to all of those around us who are thirsty. This Fountain is for All Eternity “of eternal life” This “Water,” the Word of God lives forever. Amid all changes of external circumstances, in heat and cold, hunger and thirst, prosperity and adversity, life, persecution, contempt, or death - it still lives on, and refreshes and cheers the soul. Summary God is like the waterfall. He has gushing waters pouring forth from His Word. We can hear the deafening sound. We can feel the earth shaking beneath our feet. And we certainly should be reverent at the power before us. Today is a good day to stop thirsting after the cares of this world and drink the only water that truly satisfies men's souls.
